Simple Patriotic Wreath – Great for Memorial Day and Independence Day

In this post I show you how to make a simple Patriotic Wreath that is very festive.I usually switch my décor from Spring to Patriotic mid to late May. This gives me décor that will cover both Memorial Day and Independence Day.

I love using wreaths in my outdoor décor. This year I needed a new wreath since I sold my old one when we moved from Florida. This patriotic wreath will fit the bill perfectly. This wreath works great for all of the patriotic holidays , July 4th, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day

Supplies Needed

  • Florist wire to secure the bow and create a hanger
  • Hot glue gun and refill sticks

Instructions for Making a Patriotic Wreath

Step 1 – Spray paint the wreath.

I didn’t like the dark brown color of the wreath. That was easily solved with a can of white spray painted. I painted the grapevine white and it now makes the perfect background for the decorations on my wreath.

Step 2 – Cut out stars.

I couldn’t find stars the size I wanted so I decided to try cutting them out on my Cricut. I actually couldn’t believe how easy they were. I got 2mm balsa wood sheets to use for this. If I were doing it again, I’d probably get thicker wood because the Cricut could definitely have handled it.

I used the shape feature in Cricut Design Space and resized I to be 3.5” wide and 4” tall. You have to unlock the sizing feature to be able to change it to a non-square size. If I were doing it over, I’d keep the sizing square.

When you’re cutting these out, be sure to pay attention because my machine thought it needed 11 passes and it only took 3. I wasn’t paying enough attention on the first one and scored my mat.

If you don’t have a Cricut or other cutting machine, these Wooden Stars would probably work just fine.

Step 3 – Paint the stars.

Use acrylic paints to paint the stars in the colors of your choice. I didn’t order new paints for this project, so I chose a red and blue from my craft stash to use.

Step 3 – Make a bow.

I’m not the best bow maker but I’m learning. As soon as I have it perfected, I’ll teach you. Until then, just use the method you like best. Any combination of ribbon in patriotic colors will work

I used 3 ribbons for this bow. The white with red & blue stars is 2-1/2” wide, the red & white stripe is 1-1/2” wide, and the blue with white stars is 7/8” wide. I used florist wire to hold the bow together and attach it to the wreath.

Step 4 – Attach the stars to the wreath.

The stars were super easy to attach to the bottom of the wreath with hot glue. If you use the Balsa wood just be careful not to bend them too much or break them.

Step 5 – Add some sparkle.

I thought the wreath needed something else. I had some firework cake topper picks from an earlier project, so I decided to add some of them.

Step 6 – Add hanger.

Look at your wreath and decide where you want the top to be. Use a piece of floral wire to fashion a hanger by winding the ends around the larger pieces of the grapevine. To give it added strength and hold it in place, add a drop of hot glue on each end.
