Adding a fall lantern to your home’s decor is such a fun way to decorate! While adding a little bit of ambient lighting to a room, a decorative lantern is also a simple way to change up your decor throughout the year. You can easily add seasonal elements to the lantern as the seasons change.

Supplies:

Start by gathering all your supplies. To make this fall lantern, you’ll need a handful of easy to find materials such as a lantern, candle, mini pumpkins, acorns, pine cones, ribbon, wire and floral pick.

I’m lucky because my daughter used lanterns made by her father-in-law to decorate the centers of the tables at her wedding reception, so I have several to use in decorating. Picking the perfect lantern is the most important step in this craft. Since we’ll be adding fall fillers to the inside, the best lantern for this fall craft is one with large openings or glass panes that allow you to see what’s inside.

A battery-operated candle is a great option because you can set it on a timer and it lights itself each evening. And you’ll never have to worry about the lantern being a fire hazard when the candle is lit! Just be sure it is an outdoor candle if you plan on putting it on your porch because it will melt when the temperature rises.

If you don’t have time to create some gorgeous pumpkins right now you can save this pin on your Pinterest fall craft board.

Fall Lantern – Step by Step Instructions:

Step 1 – Add a Floral Pick

  • Attach the floral pick to the one of the upper edges of your lantern using floral wire. My floral pick had fall leaves, a pumpkin, and berries, all with a bit of copper glitter to give it some glam. A pick is perfect for adding a simple fall touch to the top of the lantern. Even if your lantern has a door, you should be able to use thin wire to attach it, or you can attach it to the back of the bow and then attach both of them to the lantern handle.

Step 2 – Make a Fall Bow

  • With a pretty fall ribbon, create a bow. Start with a length of ribbon for half of the tail, then form several even loops. I only did four (two on each side) this time but usually do 6-8. Finally, leave a length of ribbon for the other half of the tail. Secure the center of the ribbon with thread.
  • Twist the ends of the floral wire together to tighten the center of the bow. Separate each loop to form the bow.
  • Cut another piece of ribbon and tie a knot in the center. Then, tie this around the center of the bow and use the tails to attach the bow to the lantern.

Step 3 – Decorate the Inside of Your Fall Lantern

  • Next, give the inside of your lantern a little bit of fall flair by adding a few fall fillers around the candle. Mini pumpkins, small pinecones, and acorns all make great fillers. Simply arrange the fillers around the bottom of the candle.
  • I chose to use some of the glitter pumpkins I made in mine to give it a little extra sparkle.
