How to Make Yarn Wrapped Hearts – Easy DIY Craft
Today, I’m sharing a super easy craft for you to add to your Valentine’s Day decor. These yarn wrapped hearts can be used for Valentine’s Day, or if you make them from neutral colors, they can be used year round. The best part is that sometimes it’s the simplest crafts that make the biggest impact. Like these easy yarn wrapped hearts.
You can make these hearts with basic materials, dress them up for any season. Start with a cardboard heart and some yarn and you can easily make a handful of them in a very short amount of time!

How to Make Yarn Wrapped Hearts
I’m not a good volume production crafting person, so making a bunch of these crafty yarn hearts got to be boring. So, if you’re like me in that way, just turn on your favorite TV show or listen to your favorite music while you work. The time will fly by and you’ll have plenty of yarn wrapped hearts for your decor before you know it!
Supplies
Yarn, in the colors you choose. I used red, pink and white.
Cardboard, cardstock, corrugated cardboard, or kraft board
Tools Needed
Scissors
Cricut or other cutting machine (optional)
Hot glue gun and extra glue sticks
Instructions For Making the Interior Bases
1. Draw several heart shapes on a piece of cardboard (from old boxes) or cardstock. You can also make a heart shape using a cookie cutter to trace if you want. Or, read below and use your Cricut or other cutting machine to cut out your hearts.
2. Cut out your heart shapes. I learned in trying to make these that the arthritis in my hands made it difficult for me to cut out the cardboard. So, I resorted to my trusty Cricut. These instructions are for the Cricut Maker and Design Space. They will need to be adjusted for your design software.
a) Open up Cricut Design Space and create a new project by pressing the New Project box.
b) Click the shape tool and choose the heart.
c) Resize the heart to about 3”. I actually unlocked my size handles and made my heart 3” on all sides. This gave me a little taller heart than originally.
d) Click the shape tool and choose the square. Resize it to only be about .25” wide and .75” tall.
e) Select both the heart and the square and click the Align button and then Center.
f) With both shapes still selected, click the Slice button in the lower left corner of the screen.
g) If you move the pieces around you will see that you now have 3 pieces – 1 heart and 2 rectangles – each called Slice Result.
h) You can delete the 2 rectangles. This should leave you with a heart with a rectangular piece in the middle of it.
i) You can now duplicate this piece as many times as you want and resize some or all of the hearts. You can also rotate the pieces to be able to get more hearts on a mat. Here’s what my mat looked like before cutting.
Just don’t make really small hearts. I found that 2″ hearts turned out to just look like a blob of yarn.
j) Now you can click Make It and cut out your hearts. I used corrugated cardboard and kraft board for mine. Both worked fine.
Instructions For Adding the Yarn
3. Leaving your yarn attached to the ball, put it through the slot in the center and hot glue it in place.
4. Start wrapping yarn around the heart shaped piece.
5. Continue yarn wrapping, changing directions as wanted. Wrapping in different directions will make your hearts more interesting. Your hearts will be thicker in the middle due to the overlapping yarn.
6. Once you have the amount of yarn you want on your heart, slip the end under a few pieces of yarn and pull a little bit out on the other side. Cut the end close to the pieces you slipped it under and pull the other end of the yarn back out of the heart. You could glue this piece if you wanted but I didn’t find it to be necessary.
Finished Project
Now that your yarn wrapped hearts are finished you have lots of display options.
You could string some together using bakers’ twine to make a simple yarn heart garland.
Put some of these cute hearts in a dough bowl with other accessories to create something pretty to sit on a table.
Add them to a lantern around a candle to create a nice lighted display.
Here you can see my mantle where I used several of those ideas.
